Usama Malik, Vice President, Worldwide Innovation, Pfizer

Usama Malik is the Vice President of Worldwide Innovation and Diversified Businesses Strategy at Pfizer Inc. In his Innovation role Usama is focused on creating a sustaining culture of Innovation within the company, while investing in transformational & disruptive ideas that enhance existing revenues or generate new ones, improve the company’s cost structure or reduce business risk; in his Diversified Businesses Strategy role, Usama is responsible for developing a diversification strategy and approach for the corporation, while crafting a sustainable high-growth strategy for the current diversified businesses with the PDB leadership team. Usama is a member of the Business Development, Strategy & Innovation as well as the Pfizer Diversified Businesses Executive Leadership teams. Previous Roles/Projects at Pfizer
Prior to his current role, Usama was a senior member of Pfizer’s Corporate Strategy group, responsible for managing the $68B Pfizer-Wyeth integration, designing and developing the BBC R&D model, developing the company’s Biosimilars strategy, and designing the Corporate Strategic Planning process among other large initiatives. Background Information.
Prior to Pfizer, Usama was a leader in Booz & Company’s healthcare and life science strategy consulting practice. In this role he consulted to the CEOs and executive teams of large Pharma, Payor, Diagnostic Services, HIT, and Hospital companies in North America and Western and Northern Europe on the topics of growth strategy, innovation, international expansion, M&A, and business and operating model transformation.
Before embarking on a healthcare career, Usama spent 7 years as a management consultant, strategic planner, and product manager in the telecommunications industry. His key focus was on creating new businesses and investing in disruptive technologies for large telecom providers in North America and Western and Northern Europe.
Usama started his professional career as a research and design engineer in 1995. He attended the University of Maryland, College Park where he received his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering with Minors in Mathematics and Philosophy. He pursued graduate course work in Computer Science at the Johns Hopkins University and received his MBA from INSEAD.
Personal Information
Usama likes to write short stories on social, cultural and political issues –
particular interest in developing markets (he grew up in Nigeria and Pakistan). He
deeply enjoys political economy and managed the campaign of a state senate candidate
in the US (also White House Fellows Program Finalist). Usama also actively
contemplates and participates in social & economic development opportunities, and
co-founded a non-profit homeless shelter 10 years ago that is still in operation.
Currently serves as board member to several non-profits. Avid runner, foodie and
world traveler. Compulsive reader. Dabbles in extreme sports.
