
James Coffin,
Worldwide Vice President and General Manager, Health Care & Life Sciences Industry
As Vice President and General Manager of Dell’s Healthcare business, Dr. Coffin is responsible for setting the strategic direction and thought leadership of Dell’s solution strategy . He leads his team in developing the latest innovative information technology solutions and services for healthcare, building the partner ecosystem and driving Dell’s thought leadership in the Healthcare and Life Sciences segment of Dell’s business.
In this role, Dr Coffin and his team work closely with a wide variety of leaders in healthcare and life sciences including medical centers and academic institutions as well as leading biotech and pharmaceutical companies to pioneer Dell’s efforts to apply leading edge information technology into areas like personalized medicine, claims processing, medical imaging, and leading edge pharmaceutical and biotech drug discovery Dr. Coffin’s business unit at Dell infuses the field of life sciences and healthcare with high-performance computers, servers, storage and services, addressing the needs of the customers in information technology’s fastest-growing market.
Prior to joining Dell, Dr. Coffin spent more than 12 years at IBM, Dr Coffin has held a variety of positions including WW Vice President of Healthcare and Life Sciences Solutions, where he built and managed multi-billion dollar business. He also held positions as Manager of Computational Chemistry in IBM Scientific and Technical Solutions Group, and spent four years as the Marketing Manager for Scientific and Technical Computing for IBM Education leading IBM’s efforts in High Performance Computing in the university and government research marketplace. Prior to joining IBM, he was considered a leader in the application of computational chemistry techniques and high performance computing to real world chemical and biological problems. He was the WW Manager of Application Support for the Polymer, Catalysis and Materials Consortium at Biosym Technologies (now Accelrys).
Dr. Coffin holds a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Arkansas and a Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana Tech. He studied at Cambridge University as a Cambridge Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellow and was a member of the scientific staff of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois.
Dr Coffin keynotes and lectures worldwide on innovation in the field of electronic medical records, personalized medicine, High Performance Computing and leading edge in silico techniques to accelerate drug discovery.
Dr. Coffin, his wife and daughter now live in Austin, Texas.
